PR | Zakia Khattabi appointed negotiator for the EU

While COP27 is in full swing, and following the experts' negotiating session, the Federal Minister for Climate Change has just been appointed European Union negotiator for the mitigation component. She will represent Europe's position in international negotiations together with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

Together with adaptation, financing, and loss and damage, mitigation is one of the four key components of the climate policy strategy. Mitigation consists of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to reduce global warming to 1.5°C.

Member States do not speak on their own behalf, their voice is given by the European Union. Member States' investment in these COPs therefore implies an assumption of responsibility by the EU in the negotiations.

"In Glasgow, we stepped up surveillance of global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and the importance of the 1.5° limit was highlighted. The challenge here in Sharm al-Sheikh is to develop a mitigation work program. Proposals should be as concrete as possible and further efforts by States should be encouraged. I am eager to speak on behalf of the EU alongside Minister Baerbock,' said Zakia Khattabi.
